Almond Blossoms

Almond Blossoms

This year I lucked-out and caught the almond bloom just as it peaked on the eve of several rain storms. So the lighting was good and the blossoms were as beautiful as ever. I have a super-high resolution image of the orchard here.

While the bird population during the day at Cosumnes River Preserve is comprised mostly of ducks, my borother in law, Jeff, spotted this Great Blue Heron tucked away in mud. I just managed to get off this shot before it flew away.

This time of year the wetlands in California's central valley are teeming with birds which have stopped here to winter. This backwater of the Cosumnes River is the habitat of ducks, geese, swans and other water fowl. At the end of the day birds from all over the valley come here to spend the night.

Andrew Wyeth passed away recently; one of the last icons of American realists of the mid-twentieth century. His Helga paintings drew attention for the artist's relationship with his subject during the 70s and 80s.

Christina's World is perhaps the most widely known work to Americans and this photograph is a tribute to his memory (without Christina).

Japanese Stones

Sometimes it's the little things that can make your day satisfying. After a recent visit to the Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco, I wandered upon a small shrine from sister city Osaka, Japan. There is an impressive stele as a central feature, but at its base were these special stones, which on closer examination, are stunningly beautiful. You just have to look.

Balloon Blower

Every year since 2001, Chabot Space & Science Center hosts a New Year's event at a civilized hour, midnight GMT, which is 4pm PDT. Part of this event is a balloon drop featuring hundreds of balloons with little "fortune cookies" inside, which can be redeemed for prizes. So if you don't want to bring you munchkins to your late-night bash, but still want to ring in the New Year with the whole family, this is the party for you.
